LOOKS DO MATTER: 4 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND TO MASTER PUBLIC SPEAKING

To reiterate, there’s no need to be someone you’re not just because you’re delivering a speech. Consequently, if you don’t wear make-up, you don’t have to wear it during your talk. And if you feel too physically uncomfortable in a suit, you may be able to “get away” with something slightly less formal.

However, do not underestimate the power of your appearance on your psyche. When you can stand before a mirror and positively state, “I look my best right now,” you’ll increase your chances of having a phenomenal public speaking experience.

1. APPEARANCE IS IMPORTANT

Check yourself in the mirror of the restroom before you enter the meeting room to make sure that everything about your appearance is in place. Wear clothing suitable for the audience you are speaking to. If you are not sure, ask the program planner when you are learning about your audience. When possible, dress one notch up from the audience. Remember that your presentation begins the moment someone recognizes you as the speaker.

2. DRESS PROPERLY:

Different speaking situations call for different clothing styles, but you are usually pretty safe if you are clean, tidy, and dressed as your audience is dressed. Your credibility is one of the pillars of persuasion. By doing so, you emphasize your similarity to your audience. This doesn’t mean you have to wear the identical suit or dress that everyone in your audience wears. There’s obviously quite a bit of latitude here. The point is that you don’t want to be significantly over-dressed or significantly under-dressed.

3. BODY LANGUAGE:

Many people think body language is only about the way you position yourself on stage. This is a big part of it, but there is much more. Body language shows your confidence. The right attitude on stage gives you an air of authority, which supports your story. Good body language means you are paying attention to different elements. For example, you have to know how to move, where to look, where to stand and what gestures to make.

4. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS:

Facial expression is the best non-verbal communicating feature we have. We can show a host of feelings with out saying a word. It can show happiness, sadness, disgust, joy, and delight. One of the most basic delights we can share is a smile. It takes so few muscles to do this. Nothing will have greater impact regarding a first impression. Of all facial expressions, master this one. Remember to add the seasoning, master the use of that non-verbal body language and facial expressions.
